A communiqué

On the occasion of such a scandalous fraud, the breed clubs (Club Español del Perro de Presa Canario, recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina de España, Club de Perros de Presa Canarios, and Club de Perros de Presa Faycán) and independents sat down (we sat down), at last, around a table to talk. And as a result of this dialogue (positive dialogue) the Communiqué was drafted and sent to the President of the Real Sociedad de Fomento de las Razas Caninas de España on May 21st of the current year, which reads as follows: The group of breeders and fanciers of the Presa Canario, who for years have carried out the slow and arduous task of recovery (reconstruction) in the Canary Archipelago, sometimes forming associations and others with independent character, but all committed to the same enterprise, have welcomed with great satisfaction the homologation of the Presa Canario Standard by the Committee of the Royal Central Canine Society, with which the Presa Canario Dog is assured of a future that everyone expects to be bright in the short term. However, after the unsatisfactory events that took place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria last April 28, 29 and 30, where the judge Mr. Sanllehí gave recognition to a very large group of dogs, many of which did not meet the Standard, and likewise designated in competition others that deserved general repudiation, with the disastrous results that such actions will have for the future of the breed, The active breeders of the Presa Canario, who have traditionally adopted such a polemic and perhaps disparate attitude, have agreed to unite criteria and work as the only solution to this situation, as an inevitable reaction to this situation. In this idea, the Club Español del Perro de Presa Canario, as a club affiliated to the Real Sociedad Canina, by itself and in union as spokesman, of the Club del Presa Canario Bardino Faicán, of the Club de Perros de Presas Canarios de Gran Canaria, and of the independent breeders Manuel Curtó Gracia and Clemente Reyes Santana, that agglutinate and project the breeding of the Presa Canario in the Archipelago, have agreed the following:

To request the annulment of the Breed Registrations granted last April 28th, as it is understood that most of the designated specimens are not an echo of the standard and do not provide the minimum necessary typicity, absent due to very clear crossbreeding, some of them in the first generation.

2º. To show total disagreement with the decisions adopted by Judge Sr. Sanllehí, on April 29th, by designating as prototypes atypical specimens due to their clear crossbreeding of Bullmastiff in the first generation and outside the dimensions established in the Standard due to the disastrous repercussions that this will have on the breed in the future, whose designations we consider should be without effect.

3º. To request the momentary suspension of the granting of the Breed Registry, on a national basis as the most reasonable measure, until the Breed Club, with the support and adhesion of the remaining associations, agrees to its resumption.

4º. Once the situation has been regularized and the Breed Registry has been resumed, the Club proposes the possibility that the judges appointed by the Royal Central Society be assisted in their work by two specialists appointed by the Club, who will score the trials together with the official judge. This system, while very rigorous, is the only way to protect and advance the breed.

5º. To request, as a consequence of what is stated in point 3 of this document, the temporary suspension of the granting of CAC to avoid speculation and competitiveness in this delicate initial phase.

And the letter ends as follows: In the firm conviction that our just requests will be attended to, they remain cordially at your disposal.

And below are the signatures of the respective club presidents and independents.

By return mail, as it were, the Spanish Presa Canario Club received with some satisfaction, the circular (Societies No 5 and Club P. Presa Canario) issued by the Committee of the Royal Canine Society of Spain dated June 6, 1989 in Madrid with the following message: In response to the request made by the Spanish Presa Canario Club, together with breeders and enthusiasts of the breed, the Committee of this RSC, in the meeting held on May 28 of this year, has agreed to put on hold everything related to the Presa Canario Dog until a thorough study with all interested parties, and to develop, through meetings, all the problems of this breed. Consequently, it is suspended from this date and temporarily, the inclusion of the Breed in question in all the National and International Dog Shows of Beauty, as well as the relation of the Register of Canine Breeds.

So far, my friend reader, Presa Canario fan or not, part of the story. What is important, what is transcendent, comes now. Be aware that it is not wasted.
