New standard

The general dissatisfaction with the first Breed Registry held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on April 29, 1989, was more than enough reason for us to meet around a table, after some groping, consultations and reluctance, the president and the secretary of the Club de Perros de Presa Faycán, the president and the secretary of the Club de Perros de Presa Canarios (both from Gran Canaria), Mr. Clemente Reyes Santana, as independent for Gran Canaria, the president and the secretary of the Club Español del Perro de Presa Canario, based in Tenerife, and Manuel Curtó Gracia (the undersigned) as independent for Tenerife. In that first reconciliation meeting, the different parties laid their cards on the table. The Perro de Presa Canario (as a project) deserved it (later it was found out that some of the attendees kept more than one letter in their sleeves -that’s up to them-). We then met several times over the course of a year. A truly important fruit of this understanding was the new standard for the Perro de Presa Canario that we elaborated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on May 21, 1989 in two sessions of four hours each. It’s not that we took the previous standard, the official one, and threw it overboard, no, nothing like that. We could not do it, nor should we do it out of respect for the people who made it (I am referring to the now official Presa Canario Club). But there is no doubt that the modified standard (that is what we called it so that no one would feel offended) differs substantially from the previous one, both in the historical part and in the descriptive part of the animal. Needless to say, the black mantle is allowed in the modified version. The Club Español del Perro de Presa Canario printed the new Patrón Racial, or Modified Breed Pattern. On the front cover the drawing, barely outlined, of the head of a Presa de Presa dog, and on the lower margin, framed, it reads (in large letters): Patrón Racial del Presa Canario (Racial Pattern of the Presa Canario). Below, in brackets and in considerably smaller print: Recommended by the Club Español del Perro de Presa Canario. This standard, as it was said at the time, is the one that will be presented to the FCI for the Official International Recognition of the Perro de Presa Canario.
